Natural vs. Synthetics: a matter of safety and effectiveness

On the way toward better management of eczema and psoriasis

Many people today are looking for "natural substances" as alternatives rather than synthetic prescription drugs for the treatment and control of eczema and psoriasis. The term "natural substance" is used very loosely in the world of alternative medicine, but probably could be defined as any substance that the basic structure found in nature and reactivity observed activity has not been altered by chemical means or process.

Some natural substances such as carrot oil, evening primrose oil, hemp oil and shea butter have been used in recent years to ease the cracking and itching experienced by eczema suffers. The companies marketing these products have many success stories with these oils. However, there is very little scientific data available in any of these natural substances suggest that psoriasis or eczema can be treated with good long-term results from the use of these oils. Positive affirmation for use of these substances is that they have none of the negative side effects seen with prolonged use of synthetic steroids and other drugs. Although the use of natural oils as moisturizers seem to show no side effects known to man, the use of these substances for long-term management of eczema or psoriasis appears to be in the best of marginal.

The fact that an alternative route is classified as a "natural substance" does not imply that the cure may be considered safe. There are many substances natural known to be dangerous and very toxic for human consumption or exposure. The known substance "strychnine" taken in its natural state as trees found in Nux vomica in Southeast Asia has been used in the past as a medicinal treatment. However, excessive human exposure to strychnine in most cases will be fatal. Humans also are known to have strong allergic reactions when exposed to natural oils found in plant poison ivy. For obvious reasons, will be clear that the "natural substances" security must be investigated before proceeding to develop these materials in products for purposes related to health.

However, this in no way makes the "synthetics" safe for human use products natural and this is true it would be, despite FDA approval. synthetic steroids as Mometasome furoate, methylprednisolone aceponate and Tiamcinolone acetonide all FDA approved drugs are used by many eczema and psoriasis sufferers. We now know that prolonged use of these drugs have serious side effects such as are the removal of the adrenal gland, Cushing syndrome, and skin thinning (atrophy). The use of pimecrolimus (1%), under the trade name of another ElidelTM FDA-approved drug, has shown some success in the management of eczema but the use of this product also carries the risk of unwanted side effects such as herpes and viral infection. Recently, new long-term studies suggest that this product may be related to some forms of cancer and the FDA has issued a warning about this product that limit its use. Although many synthetic drugs have had significant success for the management of eczema and psoriasis risk for long-term health associated with these Although drugs appear to be effective in the short term. For health reasons obvious to many people keep looking for other alternatives and safer solutions for the management of eczema and psoriasis.

Thus, in order to better manage eczema and psoriasis sporadic outbreaks of a clear scientific understanding should be first once had. As is commonly believed itching and dry skin and cracked are not the cause of eczema, but are merely symptoms of a much larger problem. Eczema associated inflammation (an autoimmune response) is the result of a malfunction of prostaglandin signal that is regulated by the production of organs of cytokines released from circulating leukocytes during microbiological intrusions or toxins. Chronic inflammation is the result of this malfunction of prostaglandins which could damage the surrounding skin tissue and eventual scarring. Further damage to skin tissue is the result of continuous accumulation of neutrophils (phagocytes) at the site of infection or intrusion (toxins) that release proteases and oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and oxygen anion super anion radicals that kill not only bacteria and other toxins, but the surrounding tissues. Thus, only the use of so-called natural oils, moisturizers, natural cortisone and synthetic to revive the kind of itching and cracking of the skin seen in eczema and psoriasis suffers only can have a mediocre and temporary.

In Nutraceuticals Xcel recently we have developed what we believe is a product of a kind of natural base that will help people better manage their eczema and psoriasis conditions. Nutraceuticals Xcel Skin Ointment (SO) has been scientifically developed to reduce itching, swelling, and heal damaged skin caused by skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis. Xcel Nutraceuticals SO is a non-drug composition of the plant, flower and fruit extracts, natural acids, amino acids, substances natural oil and vitamins. All components of Xcel SO no known toxicity in humans. Xcel OS is a safe and effective alternative for managing the eczema and psoriasis and has no undesirable side effects observed with the use of steroids or drugs derived from bacteria or fungus cultures.
